Houtkamp came to tattooing after a series of other jobs, getting her first apprenticeship at around the age of thirty, and built an international name for old-school tattooing carried out with a distinctive softness and fine-art sensibility, her recurring subjects being women's portraits, mermaids and sirens, sailors and sailors' sweethearts, and the romantic-symbolic vocabulary of classic flash. She owns and tattoos at Salon Serpent Tattoo Parlour, which she established in Amsterdam in 2011 at Jacob van Lennepstraat 58, a custom traditional-leaning studio whose roster has included artists such as Guen Douglas and Job de Quay, and her years-long waiting list is part of its reputation. In parallel she has built an international fine-art career in watercolour, framing it as a continuation of a long line of traditional tattoo artists who painted, with sell-out gallery shows, editioned prints through galleries such as Nelly Duff in London, and published books collecting her paintings and flash.
