Archive Note
Big Gus is known for fine-line black-and-grey photorealism, bringing photographic source imagery onto the body with high precision and tonal depth, and his published work has appeared in tattoo magazines internationally. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he began tattooing at age 14 and started professionally at 22, working out of Distinctive Ink in Pico Rivera, California, and went on to build a competition record reported across sources as more than 300 awards. He reached a wider audience as a host of the Spike series Tattoo Nightmares, in which artists cover or repair regretted tattoos, joining the show in 2012, and he is a longtime member of the Sullen Clothing artist family. He owns Collective Ink Gallery in Riverside, California, where he is the resident black-and-grey realism artist.
