Archive Note

Carson Hill is an American tattoo artist, machine maker, and inventor credited with building the first pneumatic tattoo machine in the year 2000, when he began the patent process and founded Neuma Tattoo Machines, based in St. George, Utah. A pneumatic machine is driven by pressurized air from a compressor rather than the electromagnetic coils of the standard electric machine, which makes it very light and lets the whole unit be sterilized in an autoclave without major disassembly. He developed the design while keeping up a tattooing career as a biomechanical specialist, selling the early Neuma2 line before later models. The reported April 2007 incorporation date and the Detroit and California locations seen in some aggregators are not reliably confirmed; the reliable record places Neuma in St. George, Utah.
