Archive Note

Ichibay (Instagram @hide_ichibay) is a resident artist at Three Tides Tattoo, the open-shop studio with locations in Osaka (Minamihorie, founded 1998) and Tokyo (Jingumae, from 2011). He works in Japanese-style tattooing in a contemporary machine register, taking the classical subjects of the tradition and reinterpreting them in clean line and shape: flowers, warriors, dragons, geishas, demons, ghosts, cats, koi carp, foxes, frogs, Fudo, snakes, crabs, tigers, and spiders. He is the subject of two published books of his drawings, Japanese Tattoo Designs (Checker Demon Press, 2012, with a foreword by Luke Atkinson) and the larger Ichibay, Lines and Drawings (Mediafriends and Tattoo Life, 2024), described by publisher Miki Vialetto as work that represents the link between traditional and modern Japanese tattooing. His legal name, birth year, and training are not disclosed in reliable public sources.
