Steve Soto

Smooth black and grey

Orange, California

The Orange County smooth black-and-grey tattooer, sometimes called a godfather of the style, who founded Goodfellas Tattoo Art and Design Studio in Orange, California.

Archive Note

Steve Soto is an American black-and-grey tattooer from Orange County, California, the oldest son of Mexican immigrant parents, widely regarded as one of the leading figures in modern smooth black-and-grey. He apprenticed under Billy Dyson and began tattooing in 2001. In 2007 he founded Goodfellas Tattoo Art and Design Studio at 2345 North Tustin Street in Orange, California, which became one of Southern California's most-decorated black-and-grey shops, covering portraiture, traditional, cover-up, Day of the Dead, and lettering work, before it closed in 2021 after roughly fourteen years. His work has won hundreds of awards at tattoo shows in the United States and abroad, including Best of Show at the Hell City Tattoo Festival and best black-and-grey honors in cities including Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, and London. He frames his own work simply as black-and-grey, and should not be confused with the late punk bassist of the same name.
