Archive Note

Tim Hendricks is a second-generation artist, the son of the painter Don Wayne Hendricks, who taught at Fullerton College and taught Tim from a young age. He has tattooed since the early 1990s in American traditional and illustrative registers while also building tattoo machines, starting in his mid-teens by making homemade machines and tattooing friends in his own neighborhood. He bought his first professional machine from Rick Walters at the historic Bert Grimm shop in Long Beach, a sale arranged through Walters's daughter, and learned handmade machine-building from Dan Dringenberg, with whom he has collaborated on machines. He founded Saltwater Tattoo Supply and bought Classic Tattoo in Fullerton, the first tattoo shop in the city and the place where he got his first tattoo as a teenager. He appeared on the television series Miami Ink and NY Ink, and has been openly critical of how reality television prioritized entertainment over craft.
